# 11. Payment Protocol

> *The DCN Payment Protocol defines how Physical Digital Assets are used to securely exchange digital value between participants. It provides a standardized, blockchain-neutral payment framework that supports consumer, merchant, enterprise, and government payment scenarios.*

## Introduction

The ability to **pay by simply handing over or tapping a Physical Digital Asset** is one of the defining capabilities of the DCN Standard.

Unlike conventional cryptocurrency wallets, where users scan QR codes, manually enter addresses, and manage gas fees, the DCN Payment Protocol provides a payment experience similar to physical cash or contactless cards while preserving blockchain security.

The protocol is intentionally **blockchain-neutral**.

Whether the underlying asset represents:

* Bitcoin
* Ethereum assets
* Stablecoins
* CBDCs
* Tokenized securities
* Loyalty points
* Gift cards
* Transit credits

the payment experience remains consistent.

The DCN Payment Protocol standardizes how payments are initiated, authorized, verified, settled, and completed across the entire ecosystem.

Each asset follows its own policy while using the same payment framework.

## Blockchain Independence

The protocol does not require merchants or users to understand blockchain-specific implementation details.

Blockchain-specific operations are delegated to the appropriate Chain Adapter.

This enables the same payment experience regardless of the underlying settlement network.
